Go Organic with Jeanie Botanicals!

Jeanie Botanicals

Don’t be deceived by her demure looks. When we first saw her at her little stall, she came across as a quiet person – but once we started asking her about her products, she turns to this chatty person and she even advised you how to use them. A very humble person to approach too!

The products packaging reminded me of an Australian product packed in amber glass jars and bottles with white labels. It is simple, clean and classy. JEANIE BOTANICALS is about simplicity, value for money and products with kind ingredients that works!

Visitors flocked to her stall during the event and they seemed to have so many questions about her products that then they ended up buying a few bottles after the consultations.

My thought is that they must be great stuff! I was sold with her Pure Castile Liquid Soap and have been using it since. They are priced just right and with just one pump – they are enough to clean my face well without the dryness taut feel. They taste good too – kinda sweet! Yup, I accidentally licked my lip while washing my face! The smell is soft and natural.

Jeanie is a strong woman indeed. Read our interview with her on her journey  setting up and her plans on growing JEANIE BOTANICALS.

Guess what?? Don’t forget to get a 10% discount when you buy directly from her site HERE! Don’t forget the magic code, VIPMOM! This offer is valid until 15 September 2015.

HP: Hi, introduce yourself to the member and what do you currently do? Do you work full day? Do you have kids?

Jeanie: Hi, my name is Jeanie and I handcrafted health and beauty products using 100% natural & organic ingredients. I’m also a mother of a 4-year old boy. I’m currently working full-time as a Senior Management of a top health and beauty company and am currently preparing to go full-time in my business by the end of this year.

HP:  How did your hobby on organic personal care making came about? How did you first started and did you start with own money or a ready capital?

Jeanie: Prior to starting JEANIE BOTANICALS, I have been in the nutrition and wellness industry for over 10 years. From a very young age, I’ve been exposed to the powerful healing properties of herbs and alternative therapies courtesy of my late grandfather who is a Herbalist and my late father a specialist in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

Since the birth of my first child, I’ve tried many natural and organic brands in the market with great hope (if they are organic they must be good, right?). However, I was greatly disappointed with the results. Despite being labelled as ‘natural’ or ‘organic’, most popular brands still contained synthetic chemicals and preservatives that can cause irritation to the skin. My son’s nappy rash had gotten worse and he had developed bad rashes from a supposedly ‘natural’ mosquito repellent product.

I was determined to find truly natural solutions that were safe and effective. My education in nutrition, chemistry & biology, work experience and family background helped me greatly.

I researched and created my own potions from the sheer healing powers of simple botanicals and natural remedies. When family and friends tried and then kept asking for more, I realized the potential of this opportunity and founded JEANIE BOTANICALS and retrained in skincare manufacturing, herbalism and natural remedies.

I started this business with my own capital. Having worked in my family’s manufacturing plant for a few years; this has helped me tremendously as I implemented good manufacturing practices and stringent quality control as part of my product requirements. Even as a small business, we need to have protocols in place right from the beginning!

HP: Where did you learn to make them and what do you do with them at first? Do you currently sell them?

Jeanie: A lot of experiences came from observing what my family does with herbs. They have always used herbs as remedies for fever, regulate high blood pressure and reduce blood sugar levels. As for skincare manufacturing, I have pursued professional and long-distance courses on herbalism and aromatherapy.

HP:  What’s your current best seller?

Jeanie: We are fortunate to have a strong follower for many of our products. One of our bestseller is the Liquid Castile Soap, which is very difficult to produce from scratch. It’s made from pure edible Italian olive oil using traditional processes. We took more than a year to R&D our formulations and perform consumer testing. Our skincare range, especially the Rose & Neroli facial toner and luxury face oil are very popular too. Besides that, our eczema remedies – handmade soaps, divine floral body oil and skin relief salve are popular with those suffering from dry/problematic skin.

HP: Why did you choose to do this as a part time business? What drives you?

Jeanie: I am motivated to help people by offering them alternatives to chemical-laden commercial products. Besides, I love to create products that are both gorgeous-looking and aromatically enhance our well-being. It’s about the whole package.

HP: What do you aspire to achieve with this small business?

Jeanie: I wish to connect with more people and educate them to use truly natural health & beauty products, one person at a time. I hope to work with more like-minded people to raise awareness on the benefits of botanicals and natural remedies.

HP: What kind of satisfaction did you get out of this business?

Jeanie: All the positive feedback that we received from consumers that we have touched in one way or another. They are often heart-warming and they always puts a smile on my face.

HP: How and where do you foresee the direction of the business you are in?

Jeanie: There are many companies offering remedy-based skincare from western countries and a lot of them have entered the Malaysian market. I hope to have the same visibility in the local and international market.

HP: How do you keep yourself motivated and driven?

Jeanie: I like to read and follow inspirational leaders like Richard Branson and Warren Buffet, and also industry leaders like Estee Lauder and herbalist Rosemary Gladstar.
I like to start my day with a dose of positivity and renewed energy to prepare for a good day ahead. Hence I’m not an avid Facebook user as I feel that people are always sharing negativity and complaints. I believe that we should take our own actions to make the world a better place to live in, rather than partake in negativity – it will consume you actually.

Besides, I like to think that I am on a mission – raising awareness on the amazing healing powers of Mother Nature. To share with people on living in tandem with our surroundings – take care of them and they will take care of us for many generations.

HP:  Any challenges or setbacks faced while you pursue your goal?

Jeanie: There’re plenty of challenges, internal or external – legal challenges, budget, rising costs etc. Every business comes with its own challenges, particularly one that has started with such little resources and knowledge in the industry.

Being a small business in a competitive industry, it can be challenging to put our brand out there with a limited budget.

We have to work many times harder to reach out to consumers as we can’t afford advertising and marketing campaigns.

We have to take one step at a time and maximize our resources. Fortunately, these are all good problems as we have received overwhelming response since our debut in the KL market in March this year.

HP: What are your daily activities like?

Jeanie: Currently, I work 16-18 hours a day. My day starts at 8am – driving my son to school, work in the office until dinner time. Business-related work only starts after dinner.

I have to work during weekends too, to meet orders and join marketing events.

I handmade everything from scratch – including designing my own website, formulating products, and designing / cutting the labels. Recently, we have outgrown our current space and have just moved to a new premise.

HP: Anything specials for the members if they buy from you directly? Do you have website/social media account for this business?

Jeanie: Yes! We would like to offer HerPortal Members a 10% Off on ALL online purchases from our website www.jeaniebotanicals.com until 15 September 2015. The voucher code is VIPMOM.

HP: What do you think about HerPortal.com and how do you think it can help you in your projects/mission?

Jeanie: I think Moms4Project.com is doing a great job in helping women find suitable jobs and contributing their skills to the workforce, even after becoming mothers.

I also aspire to create an all-women company, hiring mothers and giving them flexibility in their job and a chance to contribute to the society.

Hence I look forward to work together with Moms4Project in the near future, when we are ready to offer more part-time jobs.

Besides, I hope that my story will inspire others to start something on their own (business or being an employee) and keep on contributing their skills to the workforce. Every business needs a little compassion.

HP: Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

Jeanie: I have big plans for JEANIE BOTANICALS. I would like to enter retail outlets and perhaps a flagship store of our own that features a signature spa. It is also my long-term dream to take JEANIE BOTANICALS to the international platform.

HP: Do you have a superhero/or people that inspire you in your life? How do they inspire you?

Jeanie: My late father and grandfather were my real life heroes. They were very kind-hearted people who took care of everyone close to them and always placed the welfare of others above their own. My father studied TCM and offered acupuncture therapy for free to anyone who needed help.

HP: What do you think the challenges that Moms/Women faced at work/life these days? And how do you think society or employers can help?

Jeanie: In general, women in the workforce are regarded as less productive and often given fewer opportunities or even lower salaries.

In reality, women are the pillar of any organization. They are strong, compassionate, determined and responsible.

Due to the rising cost of living, most women have to juggle between their job and family.

I believe women, especially married and those with kids should be given more flexibility at work.

There’re very few benefits for working mom in Malaysia as compared to that of our neighbors; such as longer maternity leave, work on a part-time basis for 1 year upon childbirth, provides daycare at work etc.

Having said that, a lot of companies have offered these options in Malaysia and I believe that with the help from women groups like HerPortal, we can highlight more opportunities for Moms in the future.

HP: Thank you so much for sharing and taking part in this interview process Jeanie! You really have a beautiful mission in progress! We look forward to work with you in achieving this mission – you are welcome to join us in creating more awareness about JEANIE BOTANICALS.

Jeanie: You are most welcome! Thanks again HerPortal for the opportunity!
